Within each traffic ecosystem there are many types of enforcement. For example: Speed, Red Light, Truck Lane, Bus Lane and Tunnel Monitoring. While the systems that monitor these infringements vary from country to country, the premise for monitoring and enforcing them is universal.

With the ever-increasing volumes of traffic on the roads, incident detection is being given higher priority by roads agencies. Timeous detection and reporting of traffic incidents enable rapid response in preventing traffic congestion as well as assisting emergency vehicles to and from incidents.

The ever-increasing number of vehicles on the road results in roads deteriorating more rapidly. In order to conduct preventative maintenance, road agencies require accurate information on the class composition of vehicles using their roads. Currently, the most accurate solution is classification via inductive loop technology because the Data Recording systems give up to 95% classification accuracy and 99.9%

Traffic congestion is estimated to increase excessively every year as the number of vehicles on the roads in towns and cities are surging. In order to reduce this burden on the road infrastructure, the flow of traffic becomes paramount. Managing traffic flow by monitoring the number of vehicles at specific intersection enables traffic controllers to modify traffic signals to coincide with daily traffic patterns, allowing for free-flowing traffic during peak or otherwise congested periods.

Increasing traffic volumes can result in congestion at manual and semi-automated tolling stations. By contrast, open road tolling (ORT) or free flow tolling (FFT), allow vehicles to keep moving while still logging the vehicle and allowing for the collection of tariffs. These systems offer unparalleled classification accuracy of up to 99.5% whilst dealing with straddling and road congestion. In addition, the system offers a wealth of other information for each vehicle – such as speed, direction of travel and lane occupancy.

The increased need for cost-effective in-land bulk transport has resulted in larger trucks carrying heavier loads resulting in degradation of road surfaces. The weigh-in-motion system allows traffic to flow and also flags offending heavy vehicles. Weigh-in-motion determines the weight of an axle to a high resolution of Gross Mass Weight. In addition, because all lanes are monitored, trucks cannot avoid the system. Furthermore, the system also fulfils functions such as classification, data recording and speed monitoring.

The increase in urban traffic and the subsequent introduction of more traffic lights, wider roads and more lanes has the potential to result in greater levels of congestion and more traffic incidents. In these situations, it is vitally important that some vehicles are prioritised to move through the traffic as quickly as possible. The Intersection Management System allows for the intersection controller to be alerted to the approach of an emergency vehicle and it is then able to control the traffic lights at the intersection so that the vehicle passes through quickly and safely.
